Description
With a foreword by legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, American photographer Bob Willoughby's timeless collection of jazz photographs pays homage to the greats who pioneered an unparalleled musical genre. In Jazz: Body and Soul, you'll find unrivaled images of the most famous jazz artists of all time (listed below), as well as never-before-published photographs of inspired performances and backstage jitters. Accompanied by Willoughby's intimate recollections, this is a unique firsthand view of what it was like to experience the golden age of jazz, as part of what Dave Brubeck's son Darius proclaimed "the beginning of the beyond." Whether you're a seasoned jazzer paying tribute to your heroes, a newcomer educating yourself on all the key players, or simply a lover of gorgeous photographs, you'll find Willoughby's collection to be as enduring as the music itself. You probably have seen some of these iconic B & W photographs of Chet Baker. Gerry Mulligan and others asking yourself..."where have I seen that before" or, "who took that shot"? The answer from the West Coast of the 50's usually brings to mind the celebrated William Claxton or, Ray Avery. Finally, the artistry of photographer Bob Willoughby can be appreciated by a wider audience. These images of jazz artists captured within the stylish slip sleeve case is a must for jazz fans or, those who appreciate fine photography. Willoughby like Claxton, Herman Leonard, Avery and, Chuck Stewart captured the moment usually in performance or, the studio with a very relaxed style. You almost feel present in company with the artist which is a unique experience. "Jazz: Body and Soul" is beautifully packaged, contains interesting profiles of each subject and, best of all, is a great buy at the purchase price. A welcome addition to the collection of the dedicated jazz fan as well as an introduction to the novice of an important period in jazz history. Unfortunately, Bob Willoughby did not live to see it published but, his art remains to tell his story for generations to come.
